Mindfulness: Living with Loss and Change

Grief is one of the heart’s natural responses to loss. When we grieve we allow ourselves to feel the truth of our pain, the measure of betrayal or tragedy in our life. By our willingness to mourn, we slowly acknowledge, integrate, and accept the truth of our losses. Sometimes the best way to let go is to grieve. — Jack Kornfield

We never clear grief and loss from our experience. What we can change is our relationship with the pain that loss brings and begin to heal our hearts. Based on mindfulness and meditations of Jack Kornfield’s grief-work around living with loss and Pema Chödren’s “When Life Falls Apart,” individuals will learn containment strategies, meditative practices and somatic exercises that will help them identify how loss is impacting their lives, sit with their feelings and practical solutions for living with loss and change.

Rainbow Lodge Recovery Retreat offers both Mindfulness Based Relapse Prevention and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT):

Mindfulness Based Relapse Prevention:

MBRP is a designed as an aftercare program to support integrating mindfulness into current recovery plans. MBRP is likely to benefit individuals who have undergone initial treatment and wish to maintain their treatment gains and develop a lifestyle that supports their well being and recovery.

Course Outline:

  • Session 1: Automatic Pilot and Relapse, Awareness of Triggers and Craving

  • Session 2: Mindfulness in Daily Life: S.O.B.E.R. Breathing Exercises

  • Session 3: Mindfulness in High Risk Situations

  • Session 4: Acceptance and Skillful Action

  • Session 5: Seeing Thoughts as Thoughts and Importance of Self-Care

  • Session 6: Lifestyle Balance, Social Support and Continuing Practice

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT):

Cognitive behavioural therapy is a short-term, goal-oriented psychotherapy treatment that takes a hands-on, practical approach to problem-solving. Its goal is to change patterns of thinking or behaviour that are behind people's difficulties, and so change the way they feel.
